Technical Fault Log Sheet

I have designed this fault log sheet for technicians to fill in when talking to customers about a problem they are having with their computer. They can fill the sheet in while talking to the customer on the phone or when the customer has come down to the office to log a support request. This is good to keep track on what jobs the technician has got on and manage their time with the jobs they have got. When the log sheet has been fully completed, the log sheet can be filed away and used at a later date if necessary.

Fault

Fault 1
CPU fault from Tommy's building session on the 12/03/13.

Bent pins in the CPU that caused the computer not to boot and freeze in the boot up process.

This is because of the computers boot process goes to the CPU first and then continues to boot. the boot process will only proceed if each stage passes successfully

Windows 7 Installation

This is now Microsoft's previous version of Windows now that Windows 8 has been released. As a personal preference this is the one for me and is one of my favorite OS's that exists currently. Because it is similar to Microsoft's previous version of operating system of XP, it is easy for users to change over and adapt to the new operating system.

This is the initial home page that you are presented with as soon as you log into the system. Because it is similar to XP, the users home page is very similar to the previous version, it's just under gone some modernization.  There are some new features that have been implemented into Windows 7 such as aero peek and the new windows task bar. The new windows task bar groups similar windows together and stacks them together. Also Microsoft has implemented another useful feature that previews each window that you have open.

Overall this is a very stable operating system and is very popular with both home users and business users. This is to do with the simplicity of using the OS and also some of the advanced features that administrators can use for their employees.

Ubuntu Installation

This is free operating system that is used by a few people. It is a very user friendly OS and quick to install and get up and running. This is good for people that are on a tight budget or have no budget for purchasing an OS.

Instead of just installing Ubuntu and then having to go through another installation if you don't like it, you have an option to try it before you install it. This is something that windows doesn't offer when you load up the installation CD  If you try it and you you like it, you can easily install it onto your hard drive by a link on the desktop. You can also install Ubuntu alongside an existing OS, such as windows. This way you have the best of both worlds and can switch from one OS to the other quickly and easily.

Ubuntu is also a very stable OS and doesn't require the high end, top spec PC to run, all it requires is a basic PC that most people now don't use as it doesn't run the latest version of windows. These machines are currently well know as redundant and used as spares. Now with Ubuntu, you can install it on one of these machines and make use of it instead of it being stored away collecting dust.

Windows 8 Installation

We installed windows 8 onto the computers we built and it worked a treat. We went through the installation and it went swimmingly well. The screenshot below shows part of the installation.

Then when windows installed, we had a play around with the operating system and found out what the new features were and what was different about it. Below is a screenshot of the new interface that windows have relaeased.

Windows have now introduced a brand new interface and has done away with the traditional start menu. This has now been replaced by the tablatised look and each tab is a different application.

On my personal conclusion i think that windows 8 will not take off as well as windows 7 and xp. I can't see businesses upgrading their current setup to windows 8. It's too different and takes alot of getting used to.

Pro's and Cons of operating systems

Ubuntu
Pro’s
·      Free operating system
·      Easy to use
·      User friendly
·      Short installation time
Con’s
·      Not all programs are compatible
·      Takes a little bit of practice to get used to
Windows 7
Pro’s
·      Easy to use
·      User friendly
·      Easy navigation
Con’s
·      Hard to get a computer with it preinstalled
Windows 8
Pro’s
·      Microsoft’s latest OS
Con’s
·      Hard navigation on computers without touchscreen
·      Hard to change the navigation menu
·      Totally different to previous windows OS
Overall
In my opinion I would recommend windows 7 out of the 3 operating systems. This is because it is what most business’s use and it is an easy to use interface. Even though windows 8 has taken over from windows 7, I still think that it is the better operating system to use.
